Original 1876 11 3/4 inch x 8 3/4 inch Steel Engraving titled THE THRONE INVESTITURE
The interior of St. James’s Palace with the young Queen Victoria investing a Knight of the Garter, with courtiers and ladies in waiting.

Engraved by Henry Melville (1792-1870)
After Sir John Gilbert (1817 - 1897). Sir John Gilbert worked initially for his father's estate agency, before turning to art. In 1836 he began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institution, and from 1842 he was the first artist to contribute historical scenes to the Illustrated London News, making a total of 30,000 illustrations in forty years. Gilbert began to paint in watercolour in 1851; he was elected to the Old Water Colour Society in 1854 and was its President in 1871. He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1872 and a Royal Academician in 1876.
