Dear WORKBASKET Readers:
Spring and summer is always a time to “clean-up, paint-up and fix-up” so I thought I’d share a few time saving and helpful hints.
If you’re painting, a few paint spots are bound to end up on fabric. Try a mixture of one-half turpentine and one-half ammonia for a paint remover; just be sure to test the mixture on an unnoticeable area before using.
When using latex paints and the pan and roller method for painting, you may find that your walls will need a second coat the next day. If that is the case, don’t throw away or wash the roller! Wrap the whole thing in aluminum foil, then place it in a plastic bag and use a twist tie or tape to seal. Then pop it in the freezer. The next day unwrap the roller and handle and it will thaw while you’re preparing the paint. Works well for paintbrushes too.
When cleaning up in the yard, place a piece of heavy plastic next to the pile of clippings or leaves, rake the grass onto the sheet, then just pull the sheet to the trash barrel or compost pile.
In transplanting your seedlings, try using an apple corer. It’s just the right size for those little plants.
