Original 11 3/4 inch x 8 3/4 inch Engraving titled SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN ST. GILES’ - TEA AT THE WORKING MEN’S CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE.

Illustration by William Small (1843 - 1929). Painter, draughtsman illustrator, one of the most prolific of the 'Sixties School', worked closely with Joseph Swain (q.v.); born in Edinburgh and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy, initially worked in Edinburgh as an illustrator for advertisements; moved to London c.1865 where he established himself as a painter and illustrator and specialised in rustic themes and the poor; elected to Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, 1883, honorary member of Royal Scottish Academy, 1917; exhibited extensively including: Royal Academy, Agnews, Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, Manchester Academy of Fine Art, Royal Hiberian Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

The Graphic was a British weekly illustrated newspaper, first published on 4 December 1869 by William Luson Thomas's company Illustrated Newspapers Limited. It continued to be published weekly under this title until 23 April 1932 and then changed title to The National Graphic between 28 April and 14 July 1932; it then ceased publication, after 3,266 issues.
