Original 1893 5 1/4 inch x 6 1/2 inch Print titled THE SOWER.
With a bag of seed slung over his shoulder and his legs wrapped in straw for warmth, Millet’s peasant strides down a twilit hillside, sowing winter wheat. In the background, an ox-drawn harrow covers the sown seed with soil.
From the painting by Jean-François Millet (1814 - 1875). A French artist and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet is noted for his paintings of peasant farmers and can be categorized as part of the Realism art movement. Toward the end of his career he became increasingly interested in painting pure landscapes. He is known best for his oil paintings but is also noted for his pastels, conte crayon drawings, and etchings.
