Seller's Description
Original circa 1837 9 3/8 inch x 7 inch stipple and engraving titled SIR JOHN MORE
Portrait half-length, to the left; wearing black cap and fur collar, holding a paper in one hand, the other index finger pointing to the heaven.
Print by William Henry Mote (1803 - 1871). He was an English stipple and line engraver, primarily known for his portraits. He produced etchings for reference books, as well as original etchings. Mote became a member of the Royal Academy in his twenties and his portraits hang in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
After Hans Holbein (1497 - 1543). Hans Holbein was the first great British artist, and is regarded as one of the greatest artists of all time. He moved to England from Basel in 1526–8 and then again in 1532–43, an extremely turbulent time in English history when all around were losing their heads. His arrival effectively brought the Renaissance in painting from continental Europe to Britain.
Published by The London Printing and Publishing Company.
Lettering under title: “OB. 1779. / From the original of Holbein in the collection of / The Right Hon’ble the Earl of Pembroke.’
Image size 5 inch x 3 7/8 inch
The engraving is in good condition with slight age related toning. Reverse side blank.
