Original 1842 4 1/2 inch x 3 5/8 inch engraving titled SIR ASTLEY PASTON COOPER, BART F.R.S..
Sir Astley Paston Cooper, 1st Baronet GCH FRS (1768 – 1841) was a British surgeon and anatomist, who made historical contributions to otology, vascular surgery, the anatomy and pathology of the mammary glands and testicles, and the pathology and surgery of hernia.
Engraved by William Henry Mote (1803 - 1871). He was an English stipple and line engraver, primarily known for his portraits. He produced etchings for reference books, as well as original etchings. Mote became a member of the Royal Academy in his twenties and his portraits hang in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
After Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769 - 1830). A leading English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy.
Three-quarter length, standing to front with head turned in three-quarter profile to left, his left hand in his trouser pocket, his right resting on a low table to the left; pillar and curtain behind. With facsimile signature.
