When audiences met David Helfgott in this biopic, they met a character they would never forget. Drenched from the rain, with a cigarette drooping from his mouth as he giggles and gabs at a million miles an hour, they watched in awe as Geoffrey Rush transformed before their eyes. Who was this actor, and where did he come from? Aged 43 when Shine opened, Rush was a late bloomer winning the best actor Oscar that year.
