Seller's Description

Original 1801 18 1/4 inch x 13 inch Etching and Aquatint of a rural landscape with cattle, horses, horse trough under tree and hillside.

Print by Benedikt Piringer (1780 - 1826). Born in Vienna, Piringer was an aquatint engraver who published and printed his own prints.

From a painting by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (Dietricy) (1712 - 1774). A major German eighteenth century painter and etcher, Dietrich studied first under his father, a court painter and at the age of twelve he was sent to Dresden to study painting and etching techniques under Alexander Thiele (1685-1752). In 1729 he was appointed a court painter to Augustus II, King of Poland. He was appointed Keeper of the Dresden Gallery in 1746, Professor of the Academy of Arts, Dresden in 1764 and also Director of the Painting School at the Meissen Porcelain Factory from 1764 to 1765. He created over 180 original etchings from 1728 to 1763, equally gifted in the genres of landscapes, figure studies and religious scenes and gaining a huge reputation in both France and Germany for his ability to etch subjects in a number of different styles.

Signed and dated, 1767, in the plate ‘Dietricy’ and at the plate edge ‘B. Piringer 1801’.

Image size 13 3/8 inch x 9 1/8 inch

The etching is in very good condition with general age-related toning and minor defects from handling.
