Seller's Description
The portrait of this beautiful lady is hand painted on a thick slab (5mm) of ivory. This is a stunning-looking lady dressed in 18th century clothing. Her coiffe is in lace and adorned with flowers. This very elegant lady's portrait is exquisite and in excellent condition.
The painting is SIGNED and framed in a metal that was often used in France in the 19th century. It is called "pomponne," i.e., in English, pinchbeck. - an alloy, invented by Christopher Pinchbeck in the 18th Century. It was used extensively by Jeweller's as a Gold substitute. Pinchbeck which has the look and warmth of old, real gold, is an alloy of zinc and copper. In spite of the fact that the material, in this piece, is slightly tarnished, this brooch is in excellent vintage condition.
We date this piece to the middle of the nineteenth century. It is from a French estate sale.
weight: 19.9gr
