Seller's Description
This very large painted miniature features a pair of love birds on a beautiful floral backdrop. It dates back to the end of the nineteenth century and wearing it is like wearing a work of art on your lapel. It bears a signature -- d'Obermer who was known for designing many similar brooches. Please, examine the photographs and appreciate the beautiful pastel colors of the roses, the blue and white background, the artful composition and the talented brush strokes.
The beautiful love-bird scene is surrounded by a decorated gilded metal frame which continues through the back side. The metal is pinchbeck,, an alloy of zinc and copper, invented by Christopher Pinchbeck in the 18th Century. It was used extensively by jewellers as a Gold substitute because it has the look and warmth of old, real gold. Pinchbeck was much copied since it looks remarkably like gold and only an acid test will determine that it is not gold.
