Seller's Description

Original 1841 10 7/8 inch x 8 1/4 inch Engraving titled PETERHEAD
Peterhead sits at the easternmost point in mainland Scotland.

Engraved by Edward Paxman Brandard (1819 - 1898). A nineteenth century English painter, engraver and etcher, Edward Paxman Brandard studied the techniques of graphic art under his brother, Robert Brandard (1805-1862). During the early part of his career, E. P. Brandard was best known for his steel engraved illustrations after various contemporary painters. Both brothers in fact worked closely with J. M. W. Turner on some of his famous engraved sets of landscapes. Edward Paxman Brandard also engraved Constable's The Hay Wain and Salisbury Cathedral and was commissioned by Queen Victoria to engrave a large view of Balmoral Castle. He was a regular exhibitor at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution.
From a picture by William Henry Bartlett (1809 - 1854). Topographical draughtsman. Apprenticed to the antiquary and publisher John Britton, for whom he made illustrations until 1831. Travelled extensively producing illustrations for travel books, both those written by others and his own. Exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Watercolour Society.
Published by George Virtue, 26 Ivy Lane, London
From Finden’s “Ports, Harbours and Watering Places”

Image size 7 inch x 4 5/8 inch

The engraving is in good condition with slight foxing in the borders and some age-related toning. Reverse side blank.
