Seller's Description

Original 11 3/4 inch x 8 7/8 inch Engraving titled PAUL’S WALK IN THE REIGN OF CHARLES II.

Paul's walk in Elizabethan and early Stuart London was the name given to the central nave of Old St Paul's Cathedral, where people walked up and down in search of the latest news. At the time, St. Paul's was the centre of the London grapevine. "News-mongers", as they were called, gathered there to pass on the latest news and gossip. Those who visited the cathedral to keep up with the news were known as "Paul's-walkers".

Engraving by Valentine Walter Bromley (1848 - 1877). A British artist born into a well-known family of artists: his grandfather, William Bromley the Younger (1769-1842), was a tint-engraver; his great-grandfather, William Bromley the Elder, also an engraver, was an Associate of the Royal Academy.

From The Graphic March 30th, 1872
The Graphic was a British weekly illustrated newspaper, first published on 4 December 1869 by William Luson Thomas's company Illustrated Newspapers Limited. It continued to be published weekly under this title until 23 April 1932 and then changed title to The National Graphic between 28 April and 14 July 1932; it then ceased publication, after 3,266 issues.
