NEW ENGLAND GALLERY Hardback Book with Dust Jacket Written by Philip Kappel Over 345 pages with MANY black & white illustrations Copyright © 1966 by Philip Kappel " NEW ENGLAND GALLERY depicts our New England heritage in a collection of one hundred and fifty full-page drawings by one of America's foremost artists. " " Philip Kappel's sketches of landmarks and people are superb. Flawless in detail and perspective, they also exhibit a skillful variety of textures. Introducing a previous book by Mr. Kappel, JAMAICA GALLERY, the late John P. Marquand commented: "One is impressed by the depth and brilliance of his atmosphere. There is an illusion of sound and motion, of the heart of the sun, of the welcome cool of shadow, and always contrast in all of the Kappel work." " " The early days of pioneering, the great days of shipping, the stormy days of revolution are all stirringly recorded here by this world-renowned etcher deftly playing the dual role of author and artist. Too, he sketches quiet scenes of daily life - lobstering, weekend sailors, mending nets in Gloucester. Always his commentary is lively and fact-filled. " " NEW ENGLAND GALLERY appropriately begins with a sketch of the Mayflower II moored at Plymouth, Massachusetts. Among other New England landmarks are Boston's Louisburg Square and the Old North Church, the Witch House in Salem, and Brewster Mill, Newgate Prison and Nauset Light. Adding color to the scenes are tourists and local characters, seemingly caught at unposed moments and sketched with a sympathetic and gently humorous pen. " " Philip Kappel was born in New England and has never been long away from it. He writes: "This is the story of New England as a New Englander looks at himself in it, feeling its pulse and making his report, calling his reader's attention to what he believes is preeminently attractive or simply stressing something historically significant and vital." " " His exuberant love and deep reverence for New England have made permanent its charm, character and historical importance in NEW ENGLAND GUIDE.
