Seller's Description
Original Engravings titled THE NAWAB OF JUNAGADH, K.G., C.S.I., AND HIS COURT & ROME - A PUBLIC LETTER WRITER.
Nawab of Junagadh refers to the now defunct ex- lineage of rulers of the princely Junagadh State in the British Raj, nowadays Junagadh district in the state of Gujarat in India. This was the 6th Nawab, Sir Muhammad Mahabat Khanji II who ruled from 1851 till his death in 1882.
The Nawab engraving is by Godefroy Durand (1832 - 1896). Godefroy Durand was a draughtsman of French heritage and a well known wood engraver whose prolific works appeared in The Graphic over many years. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1873.
The Rome engraving is by Sydney Prior Hall (1842 - 1922). Sir Sydney Prior Hall MVO, MA was a British portrait painter and illustrator and one of the leading reportage artists of the later Victorian period.
The son of animal portraitist Harry Hall, Sydney Hall was educated at Merchant Taylors' School. He decided on a career as an artist while at Oxford University and joined the staff of The Graphic, an illustrated newspaper, shortly after its foundation in late 1869. He immediately established his name with a series of vivid drawings made at the front during the Franco-Prussian War.
