Seller's Description
Original French 11 inch x 15 1/4 inch page with printed painting titled LA MESSE EN FORET D’ARGONNE (automne 1914)
The Forest of Argonne is a long strip of mountainous and wild woodland in northeastern France, approximately 120 miles east of Paris. In 1792, Charles François Dumouriez outmaneuvered the invading forces of the Duke of Brunswick in the forest before the Battle of Valmy. During World War I, the forest again became the site of intense military action. Bitter fighting between German and Allied units took place here in fall and winter 1914, summer 1915, and fall 1918.
Painted by Henri Gervex (1852 - 1929). A French painter who studied painting under Alexandre Cabanel, Pierre-Nicolas Brisset, and Eugène Fromentin.
The page comes from the French magazine L’ILLUSTRATION, December 1915
The page is in fine condition. Printed paintings and text on the reverse.
