" Bernardo Bertolucci directed his first feature-film at the age of 21. Ten years later, when he approached Marlon Brando to star in Last Tango in Paris, Brando said yes without even seeing a script, because of the director's reputation. Brando had seen The Conformist, and like so many others, recognized the genius of this young filmmaker.
No stranger to controversy, Bertolucci set the firm world on its ear with Last Tango in Paris. The film's American distributor, American Artists, heightened audience expectations by announcing a reserved-seat, premium price engagement. Some people barely knew what to expect - given the participation of Brando, a completely unknown leading lady (20-year-old Maria Schneider), and rumors of possibly pornographic content in this X-rated film.
But once the picture was screened, the critics were disarmed. Even the national PTA Magazine wrote, "Last Tango in Paris is not prurient. Rather, it uses sex to study human pain, failure, loneliness, despair, and at moments even love."
Pauline Kael, the film's earliest and most eloquent champion in the pages of The New Yorker, wrote, "Last Tango in Paris was presented for the first time October 14, 1972; that date should become a landmark in movie history...[This is] a film that has made the strongest impression on me in almost twenty years of reviewing."
A decade later, Last Tango in Paris's impression is still indelible; by any standards a towering achievement. "
