Seller's Description
House of White Birches Book Two-Color Table Runners circa 1999 5 Quilting Projects
Two-Color Table Runners
Two-color quilts have been a favorite of quilters since the late 1800s. The traditional combinations of blue and white, and red and white are frequently seen today in both antique and contemporary quilts. The simple two-color scheme is well suited to the geometric patterns of traditional blocks giving them a distinctive graphic effect. The large light areas of the patterns also allow the quilter to enhance the design with beautiful quilting stitches.
This pattern book includes patterns for five table runners made using traditional quilt blocks. Though these projects have departed from the white-with-blue or -red combinations, the two-color choices used do provide the contrast needed to allow the geometric patterns of these old blocks to shine through. Whether they’re used in the mosaic look of the Flower Circles table runner or the design-within-a-design effect of the Bouquets table runner, today’s colors and fabrics do lend themselves beautifully to traditional two-color quiltmaking.
Projects in this book:
Vines Table Runner
The Chicago Tribune first published this block in their Nancy Cabot column in 1937. It was called Vines at the Window. For this project, I changed the arrangement of the blocks quarters and used Seminole-pieced vines instead of the original triangle-pieced vines
Flower Circles Table Runner
The block used in this table runner was originally published in Comfort in the early 1900s as Home Circle. It was again published under three different names in 1958 by Mrs. Danner’s Quilts.
Due to the fabric used in this project, its original name has been expanded on to result in Flower Circles.
Bouquets Table Runner
The Bouquet block used for this project was originally called Fools Square and was published by the Ladies Art Company in the early 1900s. I think the pieced corners of the block resemble tulip heads. When four are put together with the square in the center, I’m reminded of a bouquet of nodding tulips.
Tea Time Table Runner
The Cups & Saucers block used in this table runner was published in 1936 by the Kansas City Star. With the addition of outer triangles to give the runners edge added interest and the teapot and teacup quilting, Tea Time seemed an appropriate title for this project.
Surrounded Star Table Runner
This table runner began with a block called Ribbon Square published by the Ladies Art Company. By changing the original design’s corners from small stars to continuing striped bands of color, the star inside seems to be surrounded with no way out.
The book measures 28 X 21.6 X 0.1 cm (10-15/16 X 8-7/16 X 1/16 Inch) and has 16 pages, including the covers and weighs 2.1 ounces (59 grams). Shipping weight will be 90 grams.
