Seller's Description

Original French 22 inch x 15 1/4 inch page with printed photograph titled UN PAYSAGE HISTORIQUE: BORD DU CANAL DE L'YSER, ENTRE BOESINGHE ET LIZERNE

On the left, behind the row of trees, flows the Yperlee stream; behind the row of trees on the right is the Yser canal; on one side, the graves of soldiers; on the other, in the embankment, the shelters of our Zouaves protected by bags on the ground. The enemy is on the other side of the impassable channel.

On the reverse an original French 11 inch x 15 1/4 inch printed photograph titled DANS LES RUINES DE REIMS

The apse of the cathedral seen from inside a bombarded and burned house.

Reims is the most populous city in the French department of Marne, and the 12th most populous city in France. The city lies 80 miles northeast of Paris on the Vesle river, a tributary of the Aisne. Hostilities in World War I greatly damaged the city. German bombardment and a subsequent fire in 1914 did severe damage to the cathedral. The ruined cathedral became one of the central images of anti-German propaganda produced in France during the war, which presented it as evidence that German aggression targeted cultural landmarks of European civilization. Since the end of World War I, an international effort to restore the cathedral from the ruins has continued.

Plus an original French 11 inch x 15 1/4 inch printed photograph titled L’ARBRE MIS EN CROIX

The page comes from the French magazine L’ILLUSTRATION, August 1915

The page is in fine condition with a vertical centre fold.
