Seller's Description

On DVD or VHS: A rare documentary of the 1987 BREEDERS' CUP featuring THEATRICAL, MIESQUE, GROOVY and many other legends.

In 1987 the Breeders' Cup returned to its inaugural site at Hollywood Park. The Breeders' Cup took on the glamour of a major motion picture premiere...the Hollywood stars were out in full force but the true headliners in this seven-race, $10 million event were the horses themselves.

Among the most prominent of the stars assembled was the aptly named, THEATRICAL...the premiere American turf specialist who was poised to meet the challenge of European standout, TREMPOLINO in the Breeders' Cup Turf. But for racing fans everywhere, the dream match-up would come when reigning Kentucky Derby Champion, ALYSHEBA, would face the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner, FERDINAND, in the day's last event, the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic. No
Hollywood saga, however, is complete without a star who is as temperamental as he is talented...GROOVY - the favorite in the day's first race, the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint.

This entertaining and upbeat narrated documentary of the 1987 Breeders' Cup takes the viewer on an exhilarating ride though all seven races on "Championship Day", complete with interesting stories of various race favorites, interviews with their human connections and basically gives you a sampling of all the goings-on leading up to and including the big event.

Over the last three years, no trainer had run more horses or won more races on Breeders' Cup Day than D. WAYNE LUKAS. On this day alone, the three-time Trainer-of-the-Year saddled a total of fourteen horses - when the big money and prestige are on the line, no stable is more armed and ready than the powerful cross-country racing empire known as, "Team Lukas". The day's second race featured the nation's outstanding two-year-old fillies and in a field of twelve, five were entered by LUKAS! Ironically it's a long-shot named, EPITOMY, who mounts one of the most exciting stretch drives of the day to take the Juvenile Filly. When expectations are high the pressure to win is most intense and for LUKAS, it was a disappointing yet only temporary defeat...he lost this battle but the next one was about to begin. In the Distaff, his powerful three-horse entry in the small but select field would find him in the familiar confines of the winner's circle and with a horse named, SUCCESS EXPRESS in the Juvenile, Mr. Success himself...D. WAYNE LUKAS, ended his Breeders' Cup day in style - "Team Lukas" truly looked its best when the whole world was watching.

In the fifth race of the day, Hollywood park had a new course record and
France had a Breeders' Cup victory thanks to a brilliant equine filly named, MIESQUE and an equally gifted rider named, FREDDY HEAD. In 1987, THEATRICAL moved to the forefront of American turf racing after five Gr. I wins to face the challenge of European Champion and "Arc" winner, TREMPOLINO - In PAT DAY's confident hands, THEATRICAL, fought back with determination in the final strides to hold back TREMPOLINO.

The last race, the Classic would pit ALYSHEBA against FERDINAND and ultimately crown the 1987 Horse-of-the-Year. A rare glimpse of how each of these two champs is prepared for the race is shown complete with training scenes on the track and grooming segments in the barn. As post time approaches, tensions rise and as expected, the race ended in a classic finish...both Kentucky Derby winners hitting the wire together in a race now legendary! These memories and more of the 1987 Breeders' Cup can be yours!
