When the Jockey Club decided to place restrictions on the use of the whip in the early 1990's, it was to encourage jockeys to put more emphasis on their riding. At the time it was apparent that the whip was being used indiscriminanently by many jockeys. The worst offenders were riding just to exhibit themselves using brawn rather than brains and not thinking about the race and the well-being of the horse. The image of racing was becoming blemished and as a result, the Jockey Club felt it necessary to issue definite guidelines. The response from jockeys was positive; standards improved and the Jockey Club commissioned this short film to show that with more thoughtful use of the whip, you'll ride more winners.

Top jockeys and trainers such as Richard Dunwoody, Stan Mellor and Peter Scudamore demonstrate sensible riding techniques that produce greater results than excessive whip use. Introduction by John Francome.
