Original 1894 8 inch x 5 1/2 inch engraving titled CHAMOIS AT BAY.
The chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is a species of goat-antelope native to mountains in Europe, including the European Alps, the Pyrenees, the Carpathians, the Tatra Mountains, the Balkans, parts of Turkey, the Caucasus, and the Apennines. Chamois usually use speed and stealthy evasion to escape predators and can run at 31 miles per hour and can jump up to 6 feet 7 inches vertically into the air or over a distance of 20 feet.
Engraved by Josiah Wood Whymper (1813 - 1903). An English wood-engraver, book illustrator and watercolourist.
This illustration is taken from ‘The Royal Natural History’ edited by Richard Lydekker and published by Frederick Warne & Co. London and New York, 1894.
The page size is 10 inch x 6 5/8 inch
The engraving is in very good condition. Reverse side is blank.
