Seller's Description
Original 1851 7 1/8 inch x 4 5/8 inch engraving titled THE BRITANNIA TUBULAR BRIDGE OVER THE MENAI STRAITS.
Britannia Bridge is a bridge across the Menai Strait between the island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales. It was originally designed and built by the noted railway engineer Robert Stephenson as a tubular bridge of wrought iron rectangular box-section spans for carrying rail traffic. Its importance was to connect to the port of Holyhead and facilitate a sea link to Dublin, Ireland; it also formed a critical link of the Chester and Holyhead Railway's route, enabling trains to directly travel between London and the port of Holyhead.
Drawn by George Haydock Dodgson (1811 - 1880). Draughtsman on wood, painter and topographer; apprenticed to George Stephenson, the railway engineer, 1827-35. Later specialised in landscape illustration. Engraved by Samuel Bradshaw (1810-1888).
From the ‘Cyclopaedia of Useful Arts & Manufactures’ edited by Charles Tomlinson and Published by George Virtue & Co,, London & New York (1851).
The page size is 6 1/4 inch x 9 1/2 inch
The print is in very good condition with very soft creasing. Reverse side blank.
