Seller's Description
A very nice slab of Deschutes Picture jasper with beautiful hill scenes and some brushstrokes of very desirable blue. The landscape pattern goes all the way around, letting you design either multiple cabochon gem with hill or canyon scenes, or face-polish for an impressive and attractive display slab. The hills pattern is tight, which transfers well to smaller gemstones, with a few tiny black dendrites (tree or shrub-like formations) interspersed among the hills. The hills have dark-brown outlines with tan and charcoal blue-gray highlights. The dusky sky has a subtle striated pattern that reminds me of desert virga or drifting wildfire smoke. An agate-filled lightning bolt goes across the middle of the sky (not a crack). The piece is solid, except for a couple of tiny pockets near the edge, and should take a glassy polish.
Deschutes is one of the premier "porcelain" jaspers (so-named because of the glass-like polish which it takes). Deschutes, Morrisonite and Imperial jaspers are the triumvirate representing highest-quality jaspers, and each has been given the designation "King of Jaspers" by various writers. Although it is sometimes confused with the nearby Biggs jasper, Deschutes usually has tighter patterns, a different color palette and is more dense (more highly silicified). Deschutes jasper is now extinct; although the deposit was totally exhausted some 40 years ago, it is still highly sought after by collectors.
The photo which includes the measure/ruler was taken dry, the material in the other pictures was dampened to better show how the color and patterns may appear after being polished.
