Black fabricated his first wooden tank for the storage and gauging of crude oil at Findlay, OH in 1893. Growing through the years with the industry, BS&B's scope of operations included the fabrication of all types of oilfield production and natural gas processing equipment. As of 1959 BS&B established itself as a leader with its PHANTO-MATIC systems, providing automatic control of all operations from the wellhead to the pipeline. It was the first fully automatic lease system commercially available from one manufacturer. From there research laboratories have come many notable technological achievements in lease production equipment for liquid metering, automatic custody transfer, emulsion treating, water filtering, gas dehydration, low temperature separation, and ammonia absorption refrigeration.
