Seller's Description

Antique Judaica Cast Brass Wall Hanging Moroccan Style Hanukiyah Oil Menorah

This cast brass menorah is about 12 inches long overall (the hanger is about 3.5 inches) and about 6.25 inches wide at the widest point, the base of the eight-day oil tray.

The shamash is fixed about 5.5 inches about the oil tray base.  It is not removable.  It is soldered in place from the back of the piece.  You would use a wick dipped in the oil of the shamash to light the other oil wells.

Describing the item starting at the top:

The hanger, about 3.5 inches long and 2.25 inches wide at the top, is decorated with two birds, facing away from each other.  An open round ring is beneath the two birds, and connects it the body of the hanukiyah.

The top of the hanukiyah is decorated with four birds, two on each side, and they also face away from each other.  Is has an openwork design with two small flowers on either side of a mihrab or keyhole shape and a larger flower underneath the shamash.  The design is suggestive of a modern interpretation of flowers and vines; it is probably a symbol of the tree of life.  The openwork spaces are small irregular sized holes.  Whether you see the holes as open spaces or making up the shape of flowers depends on your own artistic interpretation.  One of our appraisers views the open work area at the top of the piece as an open pomegranate with its many seeds, another Jewish symbol of life and fertility.

The detail in the piece - the lines that accent the branches the birds are sitting on, their tail feathers, the petals of the flower were done as part of the casting

Beneath this section is a Moroccan style design featuring seven mihrabs (or keyholes or doorways.)  A different flower and vine design is beneath that and then the base of the menorah.  The detail in this section is both better defined and better executed including braids on both sides and the top of this section; lines shape the columns between the mihrabs and provide the detail in the flower and leaves beneath them.

The base is a a solid tray sculpted with eight separate wells (or pans) for oil and has a dentil edge.

This is a traditional design for this style of Moroccan or Moroccan-influenced menorah from the birds on top to the mihrab openings to the oil pan.  The mihrab design reflects Moroccan architecture and is not used as a symbol of another religion.

This is a Sephardic style menorah.

The shamash and tray were separate castings that have been welded on to the body of the hanukiyah from the back.

There are no hallmarks on this piece.  It is most likely Moroccan in origin and may date from the late 1880s to the mid 1900s.

This item is meant to be hung on the wall and does not stand upright.

The casting of this piece is a little rough, most artisans probably would have polished it to remove the rough edges, notably around the birds on top.  It is a handmade item and has small imperfections in the casting, including one area in the top section to the bottom right of the shamash where brass filled in what what probably intended to be small opening in the design.

The hanukiyah has been used, it does have some candle wax on it in the back (no, can't explain that) and a few small areas of paint, around the birds and on the mihrab on the left.  There are some superficial scratches on the bottom of the piece and a tiny nick on the lower right front.  There is also some green corrosion on the left side of the piece just above the first mihrab, and while this may polish off, we did not want to disturb the patina, as some prefer that.  We have seen similar pieces polished to a bright golden brass which are lovely and more in keeping with their initial use, when they would likely have been polished every Friday.)  The pans are dusty.

Most of our photographs were taken with flash to best show the details.

BUYERS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES - PLEASE NOTE:

Receipt of your item may be delayed if it has to go through custom inspection in your country.  Occasionally, this adds days or weeks to delivery.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.

During peak shipping times, it may take weeks to have your item clear customs.  We’ve had some items arrive in Europe in a week, but a package to South America once took six weeks to arrive!  Again, you’ll have to check with the customs office in your country if your item hasn’t been received.

Many DVDs also have a specific format by country.  If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.
