Agate Limb Cast with Dendrites Cabochon Gem: South Fork Crooked River (Paulina)

A glowing gem with fine inclusion. Dendritic agate from the limb casts found near the South Fork of Oregon's Crooked River can rival the famous and expensive dendrites from India and Kazakhstan. The color of the holding agate in this example reminds me of a white peach, with nicely contrasting dark dendrites. This beautiful cabochon will make a wonderful centerpiece in a pendant necklace or brooch.

Dendrites are treelike or shrublike branching mineral formations. Limb casts are formed when a buried tree or shrub branch is buried and rots away, leaving a void. Agate or other material eventually fills this void, preserving the shape and features of the original plant material. You sometimes see this material made into cabochons. The pictures show the stone dry.
