As written by Mary Boykin Chestnut, wife of James Chestnut Jr, United States Senator from South Carolina, 1859-1861, and afterward an Aide to Jefferson Davis and a Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Edited by Isabella D Martin and Myrta Lockett Avary. This original diary provides an eyewitness narrative of all the years of the war. Period photographs illustrate this account of the daily lives and tribulations of all who suffered through the war, from ordinary people to the Confederacy's generals and political figures.
