Classics Illustrated Junior # 504 - The Pied Piper! Jan. 1954 - GD
This kicks off with a Dik Brown Painted cover---he went on to create Hagar the Horrible for the newspapers! "The Pied Piper is a 30 page story by Robert Browning (original author) with Pencils and Inks by Dik Browne, as The Pied Piper rids the town of Hamelin of rats, but is cheated of his fee by the mayor and his councilmen! In revenge, he leads the children of Hamelin to a mountain that closes around them! This is a classic story of putting greed before what's right!
Classics Illustrated Junior # 507 - Jack and the Beanstalk! April 1954 - GD
Jack and the Beanstalk! This kicks off with a Dik Brown Painted cover! 30 pages by William Godwin (original author) with Pencils and Inks by Alex A. Blum tells the timeless Fairy Tale of young Jack, who exchanges the family cow for a few beans! His mother is furious and tosses the beans out the window. The next morning, Jack finds a beanstalk growing to the clouds and climbs it! In the clouds, he discovers a land dominated by a cruel Giant. On several trips up and down the beanstalk, Jack steals the Giant's bags of gold, his magic hen, and his talking harp! The Giant attempts to pursue Jack down the beanstalk but falls to his death! A good fairy restores Jack's long-lost father, a knight who has been serving for many years in the wars!
Classics Illustrated Junior # 552 - The Three Little Dwarfs! July 1958 - GD
This painted cover is by Bill Walsh (who later did Movie Posters...including Herbie the Love Bug)! He also did the interior artwork! An old widow with one daughter marries an old widower who also has one daughter. Before the wedding, the old woman promises to treat her stepdaughter even better than she treats her own daughter. She keeps that promise for a short while. Soon, however, she begins to mistreat and abuse the young woman. She comes to despise her stepdaughter and even tries to kill her! Three elves[1] who live in a small house in the forest see the stepdaughter. They invite her to come inside so that she can warm herself by their stove. The elves ask the stepdaughter to share her bread with them. She happily breaks the piece of bread in two and gives them half of it. When the elves ask her why she is in the forest, the stepdaughter tells them that she has been sent to gather strawberries. The elves give the young woman a broom and ask her to sweep the snow away from their backdoor. When the stepdaughter goes out, the elves decide to thank her for her kindness by each giving her a magical gift. The first elf's gift is that she will grow more beautiful every day. The second elf's gift is that a gold coin will fall from her mouth every time she speaks. The third elf's gift is that she will marry a king!
These, in these conditions, are worth $18.00 per Overstreet!
