Once mature, Scutellaria lateriflora produces blue flowers that reach nearly one centimeter in length. This species is also commonly called Mad Dog Skullcap, Blue Skullcap, or Scullcap.
Mad Dog Skullcap has been used in herbal medicines as a sedative and sleep promoter. Scutellaria lateriflora has also been shown to act as an anxiolytic and has been used to treat mild anxiety. The compound β-Elemene contained in Mad Dog Skullcap is now being researched for its potential anti-cancer properties.
