Original 1876 11 3/4 inch x 8 3/4 inch Steel Engraving titled WAT TYLER KILLING THE POLL-TAX COLLECTOR
Scene in blacksmith's forge; Tyler about to strike tax collector who is being pushed away by woman.
Walter "Wat" Tyler was a leader of the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England. He marched a group of rebels from Canterbury to the capital to oppose the institution of a poll tax and demand economic and social reforms. While the brief rebellion enjoyed early success, Tyler was killed by officers loyal to King Richard II during negotiations at Smithfield, London.

Engraved by John Rogers (active 1810s - 1830s)
After John Francis Rigaud (1742 - 1810). John Francis Rigaud was a painter of portraits, history and decorative pieces. Born in Italy of French descent, he was mainly active in England. He trained in his native Turin as well as Florence and Bologna and moved to London in 1771. Rigaud's major patron was Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford, for whom he decorated the Pompeian Gallery at Packington Hall, Warwickshire, in 1787. He was a member of the art academies in Bologna and London.
