Communist Diego Mora (Yves Montand) has dedicated his life to the continuing struggle against the Francoist State while living in exile in Paris. Refusing to retire, Mora attempts to serve as a strike leader in Madrid, only to have the rising generation of revolutionaries question his relevance. Eventually, only Diego's devoted lover, fellow party member Marianne (Ingrid Thulin), is on his side, as rebellion becomes synonymous with terrorism and the old forms of protest fall out of favor.
