Seller's Description

Ordnance Survey Index Map of Surrey - 1946

  • Size: 81.6cm wide x 61.0cm tall
  • Weight: 82g
  • Condition: Used with some creases - see images. Also looks like it has been folded in the past rather than staying flat or rolled. Some small brown spots, showing aging in places. Blue shadings - showing the coverage 6 inch to the mile maps, are drawn manually by hand.
  • Background map in black and white and states Ordnance Survey 1946.
  • On bottom right corner is written in pen: "Maps available: 6 in = 1 mile" with a blue rectangle - obviously a key or legend to the blue drawn elsewhere on the map showing what maps were available to sell to the public.
  • Scale at 1/2 inch to One Mile = 1/126720
  • Written on the bottom of the map: "Price: (a) Fully coloured, showing Parliamentary and Local Government Boundaries with the National Grid 4/6, (b) Local Government Boundaries only, with National Grid 3/-, *c) Combined Index to sheet lines of the Old and New 1/2,500 and Six Inch Series 3/-, (d) Index to old 1/2,500 and Six Inch Series in grey 2/-"
  • L240 printed on bottom left corner.
  • On the back of the map it says: "O.S. 6ins, 25 ins, map key" & "Surrey"
  • Notes and thoughts about this map: This map was (I cannot be certain) probably an index map used by the Ordnance Survey, immediately after WW2, to help them show what stocks of 6 inches to the Mile maps that had of Surrey, and much of the South East of England. The map is an interesting example of a working map used or produced by the Ordnance Survey - it could also have been used by Surveying companies or town councils, or perhaps map shops to show what maps were available. The base or background map, although entirely in Black and White is interesting as it shows the road and rail networks, as well as the extent of built up areas in the 1946 era, immediately after WWII, and before the Beaching Axe or building boom for New Towns. The map is unusual for collectors as I cannot find other examples of this on-line. It might also be of interest to museums in the south east of England as it covers most towns and villages here. It would look best if placed behind glass frame, on a wall, to flatten out the creases
