Seller's Description
Handy Andy. A Tale of Irish Life by Samuel Lover. 381 pages. New York: The F. M. Lupton Publishing Co. No date. Cover is a bit grubby and battered, Top edge of title page and first page have been removed and it has yellowing to page edges, otherwise good condition,
"Handy Andy" is the most enduringly popular of the novels of Samuel Lover, author, artist and musician. The laughing philosopher of the title is Andy Rooney, a fellow who had 'the most singularly ingenious knack of doing everything the wrong way'. More than simply a comic novel, it has been described as 'a pill to purge melancholy'. Lover may be equally remembered for his portraiture, most notably his miniature portrait of Paganini, and for his many ballads. There is certainly a musicality in the language, combined with the accomplished artist's eye for composition in this wonderful and farcical tale of Irish life.
