“As a very young man, Mr. Stanley Unwin, the well-known publisher, made a trip round the world to study bookselling conditions in such countries as South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, etc. He was accompanied by his future brother-in-law, Severn Storr, and during the trip each young man wrote an account of their doings. This book consists of a selection of the two journals, edited, annotated, and united into one whole. It makes most amusing and lively reading as the two young men were both very observant, and they were by no means conventional travellers. But although their adventures were varied and at times exciting, as when “Johnnie,” guiding a party over a mountain through a mist, led them all to the brink of a 4,ooo-ft. precipice, the true charm of the book lies in its human interest. Because the journals are real documents the characters of the writers emerge clear and distinct, as characters always emerge in the best, but only in the best, travel books. When the reader, having finished the World Tour, puts down the book with a sigh, he feels that he has made two new friends.”
