The Tsavo Conservation Area is a complex of protected and other wildlife areas in southern Kenya and north-eastern Tanzania. It is composed of Tsavo East National ParkTsavo West National ParkChyulu Hills National ParkSouth Kitui National Reserve, ranches in Galana, Taita, Kulalu and Amboseli and adjacent private and communal lands. The Conservation Area comprises an area of around 42,000 km2, of which over 25,000 km2 is protected. The protected portion in Kenya represent almost half of the country's protected areas.[1][2]

The wider conservation area harbours Kenya's largest elephant population, at 40% of Kenya's total elephant population, as well as 18% of Kenya's black rhino population, much of which live in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary.[1][3] There are indications that the elephant population is expanding at a rate of 4-5% per annum,[2]however there is concern that poaching remains a significant threat, with 2011 the worst year on record since the Ivory Trade Ban.[3] In addition, numbers of the critically endangered Hirola and endangered Grevy's zebra have been introduced due to difficulty in offering the species protection in their native habitats.[2]

The Tsavo Conservation Area is one of the most-visited protected areas in Kenya; however, as the majority of visitors remain in the southern parts of Tsavo East and the northern parts of Tsavo West, much of the area has remained undisturbed.[2]

Mount Kilimanjaro or just Kilimanjaro ( /ˌkɪlɪmənˈdʒɑːroʊ/),[7] with its three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and "Shira", is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) from its base, and 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. The first people known to have reached the summit of the mountain were Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889. The mountain is part of the Kilimanjaro National Parkand is a major climbing destination. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields.
