Original 1842 4 7/8 inch x 7 1/2 inch engraving titled THE TOWN AND CASTLE OF HEIDELBERG, RHINE.
Surrounded by forest, Germany’s oldest and most famous university town is renowned for its baroque Altstadt (Old Town), beautiful riverside setting and evocative half-ruined hilltop castle.
Engraved by John Cousen (1804 - 1880). Line engraver and painter. Cousen was born in Yorkshire, brother of Charles Cousen and apprenticed to the animal engraver John Scott. Exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy in 1863-1864.
After William Leighton Leitch (1804 – 1883). A master Scottish landscape watercolour painter and illustrator. He was Drawing Master to Queen Victoria for 22 years. He was Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, on Pall Mall in London, for 20 years.
