Thunderegg Core: Sculptural Miniature Mounted on Stand; Priday "Old Blue Bed"

The cores of thundereggs (lithophysae) often have quite sculptural shapes and textures that look more like they were carved by an artist than naturally formed. Their true shapes usually go unseen, as they are encased in hard rhyolite shells. Occasionally, weathering will cause the outer shell to crumble, revealing the natural little works of art within. This piece looks almost wing-like, with thin intersecting disks. One side has the indentation, which shows where the bottom was once located, and a corresponding bump at the top.

The photos were taken with the material dry under natural light. A new, faceted acrylic base and removeable mineral tack are included so that you can position it how you like for display. The strange, alien-looking shape will draw eyes to your collection shelf.
