Original 1878 4 1/2 inch x 7 1/4 inch engraving titled THOMAS CARLYLE

Sculpture of Thomas Carlyle; full length; seated in armchair, legs crossed; wearing large overcoat; after statue on the Chelsea embankment.

Engraved by Edwin Roffe (1852 - 1885; fl.). Engraver, typically after the work of sculptors.

From the statue by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834 - 1890). Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, 1st Baronet RA was a medallist and sculptor, best known for the Jubilee head of Queen Victoria on coinage, and the statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner. His oeuvre is substantial and he exhibited 123 works at the Royal Academy, from 1862 to his death in 1890.
