Seller's Description

THE Ra EXPEDITIONS
Author  - Thor Heyerdahl
 ** 1972 HARDBACK **
383 pages
First Book Club edition,
Translated from Norwegian by Patricia Crampton.
First published in 1971 by George Allen & Unwin; this volume published in 1972 by Book Club Associates in arrangement with George Allen & Unwin.

The Ra Expeditions is another true adventure story by Heyerdahl, as epic and exciting as his Kon-Tiki Expedition.

Synopsis
This book is about the two Ra expeditions.
Heyerdahl wanted to test the controversial theory that the ancient Egyptians could have reached the Americas thousands of years before Columbus.
To do so, he had to build a boat from the same materials that would have been available to the Egyptians.
The vessel Heyerdahl made was fifteen paces long, constructed of papyrus reeds - a "paperboat" - a craft not seen on the oceans of the world for centuries.
Heyerdahl copied the designs of similar boats from Egyptian tomb heiroglyphics.
Scientific experts scoffed at the very notion, and said it would disintegrate and sink if it ever left calm waters.
On the first expedition, Heyerdahl and his 6 man crew set sail from North Africa.
After 2,700 miles they were eventually battered into submission by a tremendous storm,  hemmed in by man-eating sharks, and had to abandon their craft.
However, within a year they were back with Ra II, and this time, were to be triumphant.
The crew set sail from Morocco, travelled along the African coast, rounded the Canary Isles, and crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean.
57 days and 3,270 miles after leaving North Africa, they made first landfall at Bridgetown, Barbados, only 300 miles off the coast of South America.
This explains why Pyramids are also to be found in Central and Southern America.

There is a b&w map illustration at the front of book showing their route, and 45 high-gloss colour photographs of the voyage.

Hardback book with dust-wrapper, which shows a little wear
Size:205x135mm, Full cloth, turquoise blue boards. Gold gilt lettering to spine. Spine, Binding and endpapers in good condition.
