The Royal Collection contains over 6000 paintings and is the largest private collection in the world. To inaugurate the opening of the new Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery, the Queen has lent a large number of works drawn from royal residences throughout the British Isles. The paintings in the collection of Britain's royal family are considered to be the "greatest private assemblage of art in the world". This 25 minute film, written by Caroline-Crichton-Stuart of the Royal Collection and present by Michael Wilson of the National Gallery, traces its history from the reign of Henry VIII to that of Queen Victoria, looking at many of the finest pictures which were either acquired or commissioned for royal ownership. Hampton Court Palace, Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace and Osborne House are visited, as is the Banqueting House in Whitehall with its magnificent ceiling painted by Rubens for Charles I, the greatest of Royal collectors!
