This book describes the construction and history of all the important castles in Great Britain, chiefly from the military aspect but also taking account of the domestic life within. Part of Mr. toy's plan is to describe siege operations, and to show how, as weapons developed, new means of defence were evolved to counter them. The book thus provides a history of British fortifications from the primitive earthwork to the artillery-fort.
