SQMC-TD01
Fabric 1akeout Box
Grab those beautiful oriental prints or your favorite yummy calicos and make boxes for your favorite people! We include charming fabric fortune cookies and an adorable mini box pattern. With a bit of practice you can put a box together in less than an hour.
Supplies per box:
1 fat quarter Box Almost anything. The fabric runs diagonally on the finished box, though, so diagonal stripes are iffy.
1 fat quarter Lining
¾ yd. Interfacing Crisp non-woven fusible. Pellon’s Craft Fuse™ is my favorite.
2 or 3 Buttons 3/8” to 1” diameter.
12” Boning for handle 3/8” Rigiline™ or plastic straps from mailed packages.
1 Closure 18” ribbon to tie around a button, a corded frog, or what you will.
Regular sewing thread to match box fabric.
For the fortune cookie you will also need:
Small scraps Fusible webbing Stitch Witchery™ or a paper-backed fusible web, or Seams Great™.
For the mini box you will need:
6” Narrow wired ribbon or chenille pipe cleaner for the handle. (Instead of boning.)
Useful Notions: Rotary mat and cutter, Hera marker. Pinking shears are handy for the cookies.
Since you are going to be fusing it’s necessary to preshrink your fabrics. My favorite method: fill a sink with very warm water and add half a teaspoon or so of mild liquid detergent. Drop the fabric in and swirl it around a bit. Let it sit until the water cools, then drain and rinse a few times.
Drip-dry and steam press while it’s still slightly damp. The fabric will still have a nice surface but it won’t have the icky chemicals the factory put on it, and it shouldn’t shrink any further.
