Sir George Burns was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards on 3rd September 1932 and was posted to the 3rd Battalion. After tours of duty with the 1st Battalion and the Guards Depot he was appointed ADC to the Viceroy and Governor General of India in January 1938 and then became the Adjutant of the 1st Battalion in April 1940 serving with the Battalion as part of the British Expeditionary Force in France. He commanded the 3rd Battalion in Italy from November 1943 until he attended the Staff College in 1945.
