Original 1842 4 5/8 inch x 3 5/8 inch engraving titled SIR ANTHONY CARLISLE, F.R.S..

Sir Anthony Carlisle FRCS, FRS (1768 – 1840) was an English surgeon and discoverer Of Electrolysis. Three-quarter length standing by a table on the left, looking towards the viewer, his right hand on skull on the table, anatomical book and model behind. With facsimile signature.

Engraved by James Sands (1803-1882). Line, stipple and occasional mezzotint engraver from Bolton. Apprenticed to James Heath between 1814-1818. Set up initially as a book-illustrator. Engraved portraits and prints after popular contemporary painters, e.g. Landseer. Fought a long battle to win respect from the RA as a line-engraver 1826-1855. Eventually elected ARA in 1856. Exhibited 5 works at RA. Became a Justice of the Peace for Sussex in his later years in Petworth.

After Sir Martin Archer Shee (1769 - 1850). An Irish portrait painter and president of the Royal Academy.
