Lord Kitchener and Joseph Joffre meet General Baratier. Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850 – 1916) was an Irish born senior British Army officer and colonial administrator. Kitchener came to prominence for his imperial campaigns, his involvement in the Second Boer War, and his central role in the early part of the First World War. His commanding image, appearing on recruiting posters demanding "Your country needs you!", remains recognised and parodied in popular culture.
