SCULPTURE IN ENGLAND - RENAISSANCE TO EARLY XIX CENTURY. By H.D. Molesworth

These picture books of Mediaeval and Renaissance to Early XIX Century Sculptors are designed to encourage a wider general appreciation of sculpture in England rather than to stimulate any scholarly discussions of attribution or detailed researches on origins and influences. With this end in view we hope that the whole treatment will be found simple and straight forward. As was emphasized in the Mediaeval volume, it is possible to make an almost endless choice of fifty photographs of the sculture of any period.

What applies in this respect to mediaeval sculpture is, of course, increasingly applicable to later works, of which so many are still intact. The selection is therefore arbitaey; many artists are bound to be unrepresented, and many styles without their illustration. As before, availability of photographs and accessibility of the originals have influenced our choic. We hope that this group of photographs may serve to illustrate the general trend of sculpture in England from the Renaissance to the early nineteenth century; their emphasis and detail will help the reader to give sympathetic consideration to the artistic merits as well as to the historical interest of our inheritance.
