Seller's Description

Sarbe 7 RAF Distress Beacon

Description

Do not bid if you have not read below here.

Everything below here comprises the complete description of the goods on sale and the conditions of sale.

The title above and on the listing is NOT part of the description.

You agree to my description and conditions below by your purchase.

You are buying for Parts Not Working, a Used Untested Sarbe 7 Distress beacon, no antenna or battery is supplied. These have been recently been retired from use and so will have taken place in recent conflicts.

"The SARBE 7 Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is a compact lightweight radio beacon designed for use as a military or civil survival aid and is integrated into the Aircrew Equipment Assembly (AEA). All military and civilian personnel while flying in a military aircraft (ac) as a member of the crew carry or have immediate access to a PLB."

"A key requirement of the system is for the SARBE 7 to function with a very high probability of correct operation as due to the nature of the SARBE 7, it is not required for operation until an emergency occurs."

According to government documents the Sarbe 7 was used by Fast Jets, Heavy Lift, Rotary Wing and Training Units (The training units are black and the operational units are yellow).

The following was issued by RAF Flight Safety Issue 5, undated.

"When activated, the SARBE 7 PLB transmits on 121.5 and 243 MHz. Transmissions on these frequencies will be detected by military aircraft operating within line of sight of the PLB (assuming the aircraft have TR+G selected). In particular, SAR helicopters are able to home on SARBE 7 transmissions. Furthermore, under European and ICAO guidelines, civilian commercial aircraft are obliged to monitor 121.5 MHz. In addition to airborne monitoring, the Distress and Diversion (D&D) Cells at Prestwick and Swanwick employ a total of 21 terrestrial receiver sites throughout Scotland, England and Wales to auto-triangulate on transmissions received on both 121.5 and 243 MHz. Although these receivers are mainly for aircraft in flight, transmissions from PLB sat ground level in the receiver sites ’vicinity may be detected directly. Many airfields also monitor these aeronautical distress frequencies.

On 31st Jan 2009, Cospas-Sarsat satellites ceased monitoring 121.5 or 243 MHz, and now only monitor 406 MHz, which is used in more modern distress beacons. The military 406 MHz beacon, PELS, has failed to enter service on time, and interim beacons, G2R and Fast Find, have been procured in limited numbers. These are allocated on a priority basis and are most useful when operating as singletons in very remote or mountainous areas, where line of sight detection of SARBE 7 PLB transmissions from downed aircrew is less likely, and satellite detection is more critical.

For users of SARBE 7 PLBs, it should be remembered that the beacon should always be operated in an emergency situation to improve initial detection of their plight and final homing by SAR assets. 406 MHz beacons, if carried, should be operated in addition, to use the satellite detection facility. Any airborne detection of emergency transmissions should be reported to D&D. Issue 5"
