The first of a trilogy set in 19th century China during the Opium War. At the centre of the story is the red-headed Englishman, Charlie Tyson (the 'Red Barbarian' to the Chinese) sent by an unloving father at thirteen to serve the Chairman of the East India Company in Canton. Tyson's twenty-six years in China sees him torn between his love for his Chinese family and their country and his inborn British loyalties, as tensions between the British and Chinese grow into open warfare.
