Seller's Description
Israel without Tears written and with photographs by Ruth Gruber
Signed and inscribed on half title page by author Ruth Gruber and Jack D Weiler, leader of the United Jewish Appeal (UJA.)
First Edition
8vo size blue clothbound hardcover with black titles on the spine; 240 pages plus sections of black and white photographs on glossy stock. Illustrated endpapers by Saul Steinberg.
The book is part history and part travelogue of Israel in the early days of the modern state. The author takes the reader on a tour through Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, explores the growing language and many different experiences.
Some excerpts from the book:
- "For years people have talked of the Jews as a nation of sorrow... Jews have fallen victim to persecution and mass murder... Israel is a country built not only on the graves of the dead, but on the humor of the living. The Jewish genius for laughter has become part of the very business of national life." Page 13
- "The farms of Israel are like farms nowhere in the world, shaped by a people hungering for roots and the immortality of the land. To most of its pioneers, the thing of greatest beauty in Israel, lies in the kibbutz." Page 85
- "Every kibbutz has little toddlers, with black hair, blond hair, red hair, running around like chickens. Nurses and teachers assigned to the children's quarters take care of them... Parents play with their children after work and at night each mother tucks her own children into bed." Page 94
- "On a Friday afternoon on the 14th of May, 1948, in a museum room in Tel Aviv, a short, stocky labor leader with a strong face and cowl of white hair read Israel's Proclamation of Independence. (Modern) Israel was born." Page 157
Ruth Gruber (1911-2016) was an author, journalist, photographer and humanitarian engaged in advocating for and helping refugees. Israel without Tears was her second of seven books about Israel. Among her accolades, she was the winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Jewish Book Award for her writing and the Na’amat Golda Meir Human Rights Award and awards from the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Museum of Tolerance for her humanitarian work. The 2001 film Haven is based on Gruber's life and she is the subject of the 2010 documentary Ahead of Time.
Jack D. Weiler (1904-1995) was a philanthropist involved with the United Jewish Appeal (UJA), the Jewish Agency for Israel, the Joint Distribution Committee and other charitable and humanitarian organizations. He made is living as a real estate developer, but was often quoted as saying his philanthropy was most important. One of his projects as a real estate developer included housing for over 50,000 post-war immigrants in Israel. In acknowledgement of his philanthropy the Jack D. Weiler Hospital in the Bronx and the Jack D. Weiler College of Architecture in Jerusalem were renamed for him and a town in Israel was renamed Kiriyat Jack Weiler.
The book's spine is darkened as are the outer areas of the covers. The center of the covers are blue with the surrounding areas mottled and darkened. There are tanned areas to the inside of both front and back covers/endpapers. The head and heel of spine and top corners are bumped and worn. The bottom corners are bumped.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.
During peak shipping times, it may take weeks to have your item clear customs. We’ve had some items arrive in Europe in a week, but a package to South America once took six weeks to arrive! Again, you’ll have to check with the customs office in your country if your item hasn’t been received.
Restrictions in your country may not allow us to ship certain items.
Many countries do not allow shipments of coins or precious metals, for example. Some media, including computer software, music CDs or DVDs may be restricted for sale outside the United States.
VHS and DVDs are formatted differently for different countries.
If you are purchasing a VHS videotape, please note the format your machine requires before you make your purchase. Most of our tapes are NTSC format (it is specified in the listing what the format is) which will not work in most video players in Europe and Australia. We routinely contact anyone overseas who purchases a VHS video to ask them to check if their machine can play an NTSC tape before we ship.
Many DVDs also have a specific format by country. If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.

If you see our photographs or text elsewhere on eBid or online, please let us know.
We’ve found our “stolen” photographs and text on other e-commerce websites many times. In order to help reduce fraud and image theft, you’ll notice that most of our photographs have our logo or other label appearing on each image which obscures a small part of the item.
It is possible that anyone who uses stolen images or text may not even have the item they are trying to sell and that their intention is to defraud you. We don’t want anyone to use our images or text to try and sell you something they don’t have.
