Original 1866 6 3/4 inch x 9 3/4 inch engraving titled THE POST BOY

A young woman reading a letter at the door of a cottage at left, with a child standing before her and the post boy standing in the yard with his back to the viewer, a horn in hand, watching his horse drinking by a water pump. An old lady stands in the shadows at right, looking on with disapproval. Ducks and a cockerel in the right foreground.

Engraved by Edward Goodall (1795 - 1870). Line engraver of landscapes, book illustrations. Born in Leeds, he was entirely self-taught, and practised painting and engraving from the age of 16. He is now best known for his plates after J. M. W. Turner.

After Frederick Goodall (1822 - 1904). An English artist born in London, the second son of steel line engraver Edward Goodall. His work received high praise and acclaim from critics and artists alike and he earned a fortune from his paintings.

Published in the Art Journal by J.S. Virtue & Co. Ltd., London.
